Camila was born to two Catholic parents, and she was raised to believe everything her parents told her was correct. She rarely ever spoke up, and she was quick to take up her parents stubborn attitudes, becoming hesitant to admit when she had done wrong or when she needed help. She lived in Barfield throughout her childhood, but after graduating high school, she unfortunately realized that the early nineties didn't have a lot of employment opportunities for a Hispanic woman trying to make a living on her own. She worked as a waitress on her own, but after constantly getting harassed by sleazy customers who took a fancy to her, or thought she should 'go back to her own country', she soon quit and picked up a job as a hotel maid at the Crowne Hotel.
After moving out of home in 1992, she started to enjoy being independent, that is, until she had trouble staying on top of her bills and debts. Her parents refused to help her, saying that it was just God testing her and that she needed to wait for Him to help her out, as it was his plan. Unfortunately, turning her faith to wait on God didn't do much good for her, and within eighteen months of moving out on her own, she found herself reaching new levels of desperation, she started to question the faith her parents had forced on her, and she told her parents that she didn't care about God's plan, and that she needed their help. Instead of giving her help, this put a strain on her relationship with her parents. She didn't hear from them for another three months when her mother called to tell her that her father had died of a heart attack.
Camila was devastated at the loss of her father, but no amount of apologies could make it up to her mother who believed it was Camila turning on her faith that caused him to die, as God was testing her too. Camila had no choice after this but to live completely independently. She had a few roommates over the years, but she found it easiest to live on her own where she wouldn't need to rely on anyone else. She became very self-sufficient, working and making a living, but without leaving much time for herself.
Things changed however, when she encountered a man, Jason Ackermann, who was staying at the hotel while she was in charge of cleaning his room. Even though it was not like her, she took an interest in him, and his stories of life in New York, which sounded much more exciting than anything she had ever seen. They had a brief relationship for the three weeks he was there, before he moved back to New York, and Camila continued on her own. She later found out that she was pregnant with his child. She gave birth to her son, Diego, later that year, on the twenty-sixth of November, 1997, completely on her own after her mother refused to accept an unwed, pregnant daughter back into her house.
She started to work things out on her own, however, leaving her son with her elderly neighbor, Mrs. Kwon who was happy to babysit him as she never got to see her own grandchildren. She worked her ass off for very little reward, but she was determined to make sure her son never felt abandoned like she had. Also, while she never told Diego about it, his father would come back to visit every year around the same time, visiting relatives. Camila and Jason would spend the weeks together, before he eventually left again, with no idea that Camila even had a child.
After the price of rent in her building went up, Camila and Diego moved to Blackwood Mountain in a smaller apartment, but by that point Diego was already in school and showing promise. She'd even lied to the administration about his age to get him in school earlier. She kept working, and maintaining her fling with Jason every year, until he eventually arrived in town, bearing an engagement ring, and telling Camila that he'd been in a relationship for the past two years and his fiancee was pregnant with their child. Camila considered telling him about his other child, but instead left him to be happy, and congratulated him on his engagement and his child.
She didn't see Jason again for a few more years, in 2014 when he was visiting again, this time on a business trip. When she asked why it had been so long since he visited, he explained to her that his last relatives in Barfield died a few years ago, and he had no reason to come back. Camila, who had been missing his company finally took the opportunity to tell him that they had a son together, and introduced the two of them, even though Diego was initially hesitant.
