|Rory Kurt Bales|
|Birthday:||November 18, 1985|
|Address:||290 Maple Run, Lebeaux|
Rory is a pretty tall guy, especially in high school. He ended up getting really tall before most other guys his age, so he was always a giant compared to his friends. Now it's not as much of a big deal, even though he still towers over a lot of people he knows. He's also rather skinny, so he's really kind of just a lanky guy. Besides that, he'll usually dress in a nice shirt and khakis or suit pants. When he's not actually going to work or somewhere important, he'll wear jeans instead of nice pants.
Rory is a very loyal and devoted person. With the people he cares about, he will do just about anything for them. He's a great friend because of this and completely trustworthy. However, he can sometimes get a bit obsessive over those he cares about, always expecting them to care about him just as equally. He's also very prone to jealous which has caused a lot of problems in his life. Rory can be a very dominant individual too, expecting to be the most important person and in charge of others. This can often lead to his possessive and assertive personality too. Some are kind of surprised at the two seemingly opposite extremes of Rory's feelings towards others. At one moment, he can be very sweet and affectionate, and then the next moment he can suddenly isolate himself from the other and be hostile towards them.
Even so, Rory is pretty intelligent and knowledgeable - especially in history. He knows a lot about the past history of the world and the myths and religions. He also has really great organizational skills, which is extremely helpful for his job as a registrar.
Rory Bales grew up on a small farm in Blackwood Mountain. The farm had evidently been in the family since the early 1900's, and had been passed down each generation. His father had grown up on the farm and then took over it when his father handed it down to him. Rory was the eldest child of the Bales family, and his younger siblings came along a few years later. He had a sister named Claire who was only two years younger than him. He also had a younger brother named Nathan who was three years younger. The three were pretty close to each other since there was really no one else to hang out with. Their parents would often give them small tasks on the farm to help keep things in order, but Rory never had to do much work until he was a teenager.
At first, Rory was homeschooled by his mother who had a teaching degree. She used to be a teacher at Barfield Elementary School, but after marrying Rory's father, she quit her job to help him out. She then homeschooled their kids, thinking it was easier to do that than to have to send them to school and pay for the gas to do that. Rory didn't mind always being at home and thought it was nice and relaxing. However, he did always want to find new friends besides his sister and brother, but his parents decided against it. Sure, sometimes his cousins would also come by to visit them, but that was only once every other month, and Rory was lonely.
When Rory turned fourteen, his father started giving him more work to do on the farm. He disliked the work and wanted to do something else. Often times, Rory would get distracted by a book he was reading and would sit inside the barn in the hayloft and read. Whenever his father caught him not working, he would get yelled at. Only a few times did his father ever actually hit him, but Rory thought it was just a part of life. He never questioned such a thing and just continued on with it.
At the age of fifteen, Rory started attending school at Barfield High. His father had been against it, claiming that he needed Rory and the other two to help out on the farm all day, but their mother convinced him otherwise. There had been a lot of arguing and fighting that summer between Rory's parents and sometimes he couldn't sleep at night because of the yelling, but his mother had somehow managed to win in the arguments. Rory was of course pleased to be able to attend an actual school and was definitely excited. His first day was very strange since he was completely lost and confused, but he soon got into the habit of classes. He was really awkward at school and most people didn't really talk to him, but he was able to make a few friends. Also during school, he started to realize just how interesting history was. He completely loved it and would always go home telling his parents about the different and interesting facts he had learned. Sure, he had had history classes through his mother, but she was never into the subject and made it sound so dreadfully boring. Whenever Rory was helping his dad do the work on the farm, he would tell him all about different things. His father mostly ignored his ramblings.
Finally, Rory graduated high school and began attending the University of Miduna Beach. He lived in the dorms at the school, but he would still return home whenever he had the chance to help on the farm. His father had told him that they would help pay for the tuition if Rory helped work on the farm, so he agreed. At the university, he dated a classmate named Valeria Pink. She would enjoy listening to his ramblings and he loved just being around her. At the end of their senior year, he proposed to her and she said yes. They decided they would get married in about a year once they both had good jobs and could afford it. Rory got a job at Miduna Beach High School and taught World History classes there. He also had a small Mythology class that he taught. He didn't really love the job that much, but he didn't entirely hate it. It paid well for him and he was able to live in a nice apartment with Valeria.
A few months before their wedding, Valeria become close with a coworker of hers. They were always hanging out together and staying after work with each other. Rory became jealous that she was rarely ever home to be around him, and he would always ask her questions about what she was doing with her coworker, Alec. She would get annoyed with his obsessive questions, but answered them anyway, always telling him that nothing was going on between her and Alec. After a few months, Rory lost his temper when she came home at around one in the morning after she was with Alec. They argued and yelled at each other for almost an hour before cops showed up after getting calls from neighbors complaining about them. Valeria broke up with him the next day and left him. A year later, Rory heard from an old friend that Valeria and Alec were getting married soon.
Hearing about Valeria's upcoming wedding completely tore Rory to pieces. He still loved her and knowing that the man he thought she had been cheating on him with was the man she was going to marry completely broke his heart. He couldn't wrap his mind around it. He took a crazy chance and quit his job at MBHS since he didn't particularly like it and he was tired of his annoying coworkers who always wanted to know about his personal life. Plus, sometimes he heard some of them gossiping about his failed relationship and he wanted nothing to do with that. After a few months of being unemployed and barely able to make rent, he finally got a new job at the Natural History Museum of Lebeaux. At first he worked as a Docent in the museum and would do tours and greet guests. He worked as this for a few years until he finally applied for a job opening at the museum as the Registrar, which would allow him to not have to deal with people that much. He got the job and has been working in this new position for the past year.
Besides working most of his time, Rory does still try to get out. He's dated a few people over the years, but it was never anything serious. He still doesn't think he's really over Valeria, even though he knows he should be. It's been over five years, so he needs to move on, but he doesn't seem to think he can. All he thinks is that every woman he ever gets serious with will just leave him like she did.
Rory's family was always a bit messed up. His father always seemed to be angry and drunk, and would sometimes go as far as beating his family. Rory has never liked or cared about his father, but he did try to treat him with respect and be nice to him so he wouldn't have to worry about the aftermath of not doing so. Rory's mother was another story since she was usually kind to him. She would sometimes hurt him too, but it was only just smacks across the face. Still, he liked her more than his father.
Rory's siblings all seemed to be in the same family hating boat as him. They did all care about each other, and spent a lot of time together. He still talks to his sister Claire a lot - usually over the phone or through text messages. However, he and his brother Nathan don't talk nearly as much anymore since Nathan still lives on the farm and is planning on taking over it one day. Their parents still live there and since Nathan already has two of his own kids, Rory sometimes wonders to himself if Nathan will end up just like their father.
Nivedita Bhaduri and Rory are neighbors. They weren't very talkative to each other since neighbors don't really talk that much, but after a while they started to actually get to know each other. He spends a lot of time with her when he gets home from work.
Holly Escalera and Rory both work at the Natural History Museum of Lebeaux, which is where they met, obviously. They talked a few times and started to really get to know each other. Since then, Rory has really started liking her and considering her to be a good friend.
