Ruby Kong grew up in Barfield on the poorer side of the city, which was often known as the ghetto. Her parents were both newcomers to the country, so they couldn't really afford anywhere better. Growing up, Ruby would never invite her friends from school over since she thought it was embarrassing to live where she did. She visited her friends a lot though, always finding herself slightly jealous about everything they had. In high school, Ruby always wanted more and more, but her parents could never afford anything else. She became a very materialistic person, hoping that maybe she could live in big fancy houses like some her friends did. She didn't really have any friends in her neighborhood though, since she would always ignore them in school, hoping that it would prove she wasn't living among them and was above them.
Her senior year, Ruby received a full scholarship to a university in Montana. She packed her bags and left home, ready to attend the university and start a new life there. She studied teaching and English while there, planning on being a high school English teacher. She had always loved reading books and writing, so she wanted to help open the minds of teenagers to see it as amazing as she did. After graduating university, a few of her friends and her went on a roadtrip in Canada since her one friend was from the country. They stayed near a Native American reservation for a few weeks, and during that time, Ruby met a man and ended up sleeping with him a few different times during the short period of time. She did actually really like him, and they exchanged numbers to talk a bit when she left. When she ended up back in Barfield, she soon found out she was pregnant. However, she moved to Miduna Beach after ending up back in the states, thinking it was a nicer area there anyway.
At first, Ruby planned on getting rid of the child, but then decided to go ahead and have it. She wasn't very excited about the whole thing, but she did continue writing the man she had been with. She never mentioned being pregnant to him though, but wanted to keep him interested in her. She wrote him once though that had a strange question in it, asking what he would name his child if he were to ever have one. When he answered her, she decided to name the kid she was having the name he wanted. After she had her child and named him Mingan, she went back to Canada and told his father everything. He agreed to take care of the child, and Ruby was thankful that she could get her life back to normal now. She went back to Miduna Beach and was lucky enough to get a job as an English 12 teacher.
Since then, Ruby has thought about Mingan a few times, wondering how he's doing. She's written Apisi, his father, a few times over the many years, but not enough to know much about how he's doing. She doesn't know that he left Mingan with his brother instead of taking care of him himself all these years. She knows he did end up in Montreal since he's sent her two letters from the city. She also still works as an English 11 and 12 teacher at Miduna Beach High School, although lately she's been eyeing a position at Harrington Grammar School which would have a much better pay. Ruby has also since married a man named Emmett Moore, although she decided to not take his last name and keep hers as Kong. She's been married to him for almost eleven years and they have one child together who is currently nine years old. Her husband works as a laywer in a law firm in Barfield, so he spends a lot of his time over there.
